So it turns out that a tin roof gets really hot. It is always best to keep your bees in partial shade and partial sun but that is not always possible. So our hives that are in the sun have been getting too hot for the bees. In the heat of the day we see a ton of bees out on the landing pad because the inside is way too toasty. So to fix this we made up some bamboo roof covers to shade the hives. It was simple, quick, and free! We went to the bamboo walk, harvested some bamboo, cut it down to size, and nailed the bamboo to pieces of scrap wood. Easy peasy! <br />

We saw them in almost all of our hives, which is really concerning. Hive beetles cause damage to the hive by hurting the comb, honey, and polle. They can also be a sign of a hive not strong enough to fight them off. Simply, hive beetles suck. They are so lame (like goats, as Emmanuel would say). To help our bees we made some hive beetle traps out of any small containers we could find. We drilled holes too small for the bees (hopefully) and big enough for hive beetles. We put a small piece of banana in the middle surrounded by a mix of vegetable oil and honey. The honey and the banana is to attract the beetles into the trap where the oil will drown them. We set the traps and checked them a couple days later. We caught one beetle! Our biggest concern was that the bees could not fit through the holes and drown themselves but there were no bees in the traps so that was great. I think finding the most effective trap will be a trial and error process but these seem to work at least a little bit!<br />

I've been four times but didn't remember to take pictures until yesterday. My pictures don't even include the outside part of the market, which seems just as big as the inside part. The Thursday market is a hot mess, literally. It is like a normal farmer's market on steroids and crack There are fruits and veggies of all kinds along with an assorted mix of other goods. My favorite part is definitely the "street" names: Yam Street, Mango Way, and Pear Lane just to name a few. Our best purchase this trip? 100 lbs of watermelon!!! Though the chances of it lasting a week are slim to none. <br />

The first call came when Erin and I were at the beach. We were just hanging out when Kwao came down and told us to suit up quick! Kwao's friend, Lloydie, had a beehive hanging precariously above a path he frequently walks. We needed to remove it so it wouldn't fall on someone. So we quickly suited up, picked up Lloydie, and headed to the hive! <br />
<br />
The hive was in a duck ant's nest hanging over a path. We took it town and got to work. This hive had a surprising amount of honey-a nice treat! We tied all the brood comb in and got to work finding the queen. This queen took forever to find. It is hard to find her in termite's nests because there are so many crevices she can hide in. Kwao actually spotted her twice but she ran away and hid. Luckily, the third time was the charm! We got her in the queen cage and put her into the box. Once the rest of the bees sensed where she was, they all started marching into the box. A couple days ago we moved the hive down to the bee yard at the house and they seem to be doing well :) <br />

<em>Going in the hive!</em></div>
<br />
We performed our next beemergency rescue yesterday. We stumbled upon this hive that seriously needed some help! Kwao, Joshua, and I were at the hardware store buying some more supplies when the store owner told Kwao about a hive he had heard about but didn't have time to go get. He told us where to find it and said we we're welcome to it. The hive was in a tree stump in a bulldozed plot of land right off the road near Annotto Bay. We covered the exposed comb with leaves so they wouldn't melt and left to pick up Erin and Desmond. These poor bees had been the victims of development. A bulldozer had knocked down the stump they lived, destroying their home and leaving them out in the sun to bake. The comb was lying on the ground and there were dead bees everywhere. It was really sad. All we could do is give them a new home in a safe place and wait and see. <br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<em>The shaded bees</em></div>
<br />
This queen also took forever to find. Although it is nerve wracking when you can't find her for a while, the better a queen can hide from you, the stronger she probably is. And a strong queen is great for a hive so it is a bit of a give and take. Anyway, this queen took us a long time but I FOUND HER! It was my first queen spotting and it was exhilarating. She is beautiful. <br />
<br />
The drones we saw were bigger than half an inch long and they were super fat. We didn't know how big the queen was going to be or how dark since these bees were bigger and darker than normal but she was very normal. Some of the drones were even bigger than her! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<em>The queen in her cage. All the bees are already surrouding her so you can't even see her big butt!</em><br />
<br />
After we got the queen, we left to give them some time to get into the box. A guy who had stopped to watch what we were doing ended up showing us another hive we can take down. It is an exposed hive and we expect to get it in the next few days--assuming a hurricane doesn't stop us! <br />
<br />
After looking at that hive we went home for dinner and then went back out to pick our bees up. Usually we let the hive stay where the old hive was for a week or more so the bees get used to their new home. However, because this one was right next to the road and the bees had already been traumatized we decided to take them home right away so no one would steal them. The drive home went well. The bees got out of the hive and into the bag but luckily we used three bags so no problem! Now the bees are chillin in the bee yard and seem happy. We'll let the queen out in a few days and I hope they'll stick around.<br />
<br />
Note: The bulldozed hive was the first hive we have taken out where no one got stung. Not once. Not even Kwao. It was amazing. The bees were so calm, I hope because they realized we were trying to help them.<br />

He went back to Honduras a few days ago. I learned so much from him this past month, I'm really glad I got the opportunity to work with him. Hopefully I will get to in the future. Until then, thanks, Tom! <div class="separator"style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPhk9EwS0fzhnPWj6keXeCCycnqmu_5CG87st7HscfXf9NRR7Eseio9G80rL1IH-lJPk4QZVBkdIDOmQagP3iGp77WYLx2SJUimbx6Aj0Hjf2tmuCvhTp1rUwQsFA24MvMuRC9m6NQmRg/s640/blogger-image--639138541.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPhk9EwS0fzhnPWj6keXeCCycnqmu_5CG87st7HscfXf9NRR7Eseio9G80rL1IH-lJPk4QZVBkdIDOmQagP3iGp77WYLx2SJUimbx6Aj0Hjf2tmuCvhTp1rUwQsFA24MvMuRC9m6NQmRg/s640/blogger-image--639138541.jpg" /></a></div>Deirdre Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04097761252458068095noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9208835969577156648.post-52473855807861920372012-08-02T16:33:00.001-07:002012-08-02T16:33:54.752-07:00Baby Goats!!Okay so I've been a little lazy about blogging lately but I promise a real update soon. Just kidding. Erin and I could never stay up that late. But it was as close to midnight as we are ever going to get. A couple of days ago we moved two of the wild hives we caught up to Kwao's farm and one down to the house. Each hive had been left in it's original location for over a week so the bees had settled themselves and gotten used to their new homes. It was a tricky job. First, you have to do everything at night, after it gets dark. If you do it earlier, not all the bees will have returned from foraging and they might get left behind. However, bees are also attracted to light so using lots of flashlights also poses a problem. A combination of overpreparedness and minimal flashlight use works best. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJIjiXAnN4gVL-kljgwI2pjaOKbDr04vRzwLaQudCYLEp2SFEwo_yokrItzPXEdrUI4vo5Apn3YcJfiGEwh0wcWG9_u_6INI4WEF73Ahq0CIwQ7mE_8ZzvzPTH_HoPUqcTuQ8dSvUESOw/s1600/IMG_1231.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJIjiXAnN4gVL-kljgwI2pjaOKbDr04vRzwLaQudCYLEp2SFEwo_yokrItzPXEdrUI4vo5Apn3YcJfiGEwh0wcWG9_u_6INI4WEF73Ahq0CIwQ7mE_8ZzvzPTH_HoPUqcTuQ8dSvUESOw/s320/IMG_1231.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<em><span style="font-size: x-small;">Moving the bees</span></em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The distance we were moving the bees was too far to walk (the farther away you move them, the less likely they'll return to the site of their previous home) so we had to get the hive ready to be moved by car. Since we also would be riding in the car, this meant making sure there was no way for the aggitated bees to get out. First, we lit the smoker and drove the bees chilling on the landing pad back into the hive. Then, we stuffed the entrance with a plastic bag so the bees couldn't get out. We then tied three separate garbage bags over the hive. Carefully, Kwao carried the hive back to the car and placed it on cushions in the back. Erin and I jumped in next to the hive to prevent it from moving as much as possible and we were off! Of the three hives we have moved we haven't had any problems so far. However, it only takes a small hole in our bags for the bees to join us in the car. Therefore, Erin and I ride with our gear on just to be safe. </div>

I've been stung! It was like a thousand tiny beedrills emerged from their pokeballs and attacked me all at once!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguj5TKJ7G7XB-Le1RBkipIiFqmwSwDlhSSXhycWTuwAWgxbFNFVV-evn9ExX62LNNxFniTI8YNQqGgOQj1LB0GVNdKRFIeS2NvOJQUUL2e4fLq-NpCX3LbuFP0dhBDXYvECeaepGLPeIQ/s1600/images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEguj5TKJ7G7XB-Le1RBkipIiFqmwSwDlhSSXhycWTuwAWgxbFNFVV-evn9ExX62LNNxFniTI8YNQqGgOQj1LB0GVNdKRFIeS2NvOJQUUL2e4fLq-NpCX3LbuFP0dhBDXYvECeaepGLPeIQ/s1600/images.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just kidding. It was one little bee who stung me on my left shoulder blade. We were going into the hive to take out their feeders so we can move the hive without breaking any comb. I must admit, I've been getting cocky, or maybe just lazy. Either way, I was not wearing a bee veil or anything of the sort. As I was pulling out the feeders the bees got a little testy and one stung me. It hurt, I guess. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYLMpS5kPTAAcHHH62XdBI1LuV9DSr45q4exlZs-RtbCnvR7w8jxMOvxdqTT3Bsr8CuxyCBiFyIfHT_INvguVWQ71tvWqUEF0VWCYwFp1GROzTrZDd8AJ7CFxWyTiQjFSWmdmwVsc2wGI/s1600/IMG_1236.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYLMpS5kPTAAcHHH62XdBI1LuV9DSr45q4exlZs-RtbCnvR7w8jxMOvxdqTT3Bsr8CuxyCBiFyIfHT_INvguVWQ71tvWqUEF0VWCYwFp1GROzTrZDd8AJ7CFxWyTiQjFSWmdmwVsc2wGI/s320/IMG_1236.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The circle marks around the bite are from where I pressed a penny against the sting for fifteen minutes. Shortly after arriving in Jamaica, I received an email from my grandparents saying that the copper in a penny counteracts whatever is in the sting that makes it swell. I'm not one hundred percent sure this is valid but it was worth fifteen minutes to try it! Really, though, I just feel bad for the bee who died from stinging me. While I understand the necessary survival instinct, I was not going to harm her or her hive in any way. I wish she had saved her one-time defense for a serious threat. But what can you do?</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fun (morbid?) fact: When a bee stings you it only dies because the barbed stinger get stuck in your skin and when it tries to fly away, all its organs get ripped out. Bees can sting each other without dying. </div>Deirdre Leehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04097761252458068095noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9208835969577156648.post-42075950255055195712012-07-20T17:09:00.001-07:002012-07-20T17:09:26.434-07:00Got My Hair DidI've done it! So, I understand the irony of posting this right after "Chiller Bees" but because of my limited internet access this is just the way things ended up. I was saving this post for when I got stung but the events of this past Friday screamed "NOT THE BEES!" almost as ferociously as Nicolas Cage does.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/-1GadTfGFvU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here goes the events of this past Friday the 13th: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Erin and I wake up to just another normal day. At breakfast we ask Kwao what is on the agenda and he tells us that he wants to go take down the hive in a tree next door. Cool. Sounds like a plan. We get all our gear ready and walk to <a href="http://strawberryfieldstogether.com/" target="_blank">Strawberry Fields Together</a>, ready to take down the hive. Since the hive is high up in a termite's nest in a tree, Desmond brings his chainsaw. After some discussion it is decided that the best course of action is to simply cut the tree down, let it fall over the gully, and work from there. Good. Solid plan. So we all watch as Desmond goes to work...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/NjcasPRi8OY?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Unfortunately, I stopped taking the video at exactly the wrong moment. Literally seconds after the video ends, the bees started making their way across the gully towards us. No one had geared up yet so we started backing away carefully to let the bees calm down. All of a sudden everyone is running. I hear Emmanuel's frantic cries, "the bees! the bees!" Erin, calmly running beside me informs me, "shit, I think there are bees stuck in my hair." We stop to get the bees out of Erin's hair but unfortunately, she gets stung anyway. Now, I hear bees buzzing all around me and I realize they have caught up to us and are now in my hair. So there Erin and I are, running away from the hive whipping our hair back and forth like no others. Now we are far enough that we begin to slow down, laughing hysterically at our circumstances when Emmanuel sprints towards us crying that there are bees in his hair! We stop to untangle the two bees from his dreadlocks before continuing our journey home. Miraculously, I did not get stung at all! We chilled at home for ten minutes or so before returning to the hive to find Tom. Tom stayed the entire time and only got stung once. After all that excitement, though, it was time to get to work. The rest of the day was less exciting, thankfully. We tied the comb to our frames, found the queen, and wached as the bees filed into their new home. </div>

So it turns out that Jamaican bees are the chillest bees on the planet. We're not sure exactly what species they are but they are definitely not the Africanized "killer" bees. Of the wild hives we have taken down so far, they have all been very docile. Part of it is probably because there is no honey right now, so they don't have as much to protect in their hives. But still, Erin and I are finding that we are much braver than we thought when it comes to gearing up to work with the bees. Below are some pictures of what we have been doing the past week or so (minus our Friday-the-13th hive--see "Not the Bees!").</div>

<em>The Bees Go Marching!</em></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When you see the bees marching into the hive like this it usually means that you have the queen in the hive. The queen is crucial. Without her, there is little hope for keeping your hive. However, finding the queen is not always an easy task. We did not see her when taking down this hive but, because of how the bees were marching in and fanning the entrance (telling the other bees to "come here!") we figured that we had gotten her in the hive. Unfortunately, after checking this hive a few days later, the bees had left. Upon closer inspection we found a disgusting number of hive beetles in the comb. This is probably why they absconded but we will never know for sure.</div>

Today we transferred a wild hive that Kwao had up on their farm. He had it in a Langstroth hive and we transferred it to our larger, beautiful top bar hive. It took a long time to tie the comb on to the bars but it was an exciting experience. As we were cleaning up, though, I noticed many bees on my head and pointed them out to Kwao. It was then that he noticed the queen was sitting on my head! But before we could do anything she flew away. Hopefully she either flies back into the hive or they raise a new queen. I am optimistic :) </div>

After building them a new home we went on an adventure to get some bees! Taking down the wild hives was insane. Damon, Kwao's cousin helped us move the bees from the their wild hives to our luxurious top bar hives. Two of the hives were in large termite nests and the other was a small swarm attached to a tree. <br />

We checked them about a week later and three of them had bees! Whether the hives have a queen is unknown, the bees might just have been hanging out there for a bit before returning home. But hopefully when we go to take them down there will be bees everywhere! <br />
We also built two more trap hives using bamboo for the sides. It was a lot more difficult than using wood, but the bamboo was free, scavenged from a forest not too far away. <br />

Once the hives were built we painted the inside with lemongrass tea (to attract the bees) and hung them up near an exposed hive someone in town knew about. The exposed hive is ridiculous--it is just a colony of bees building their comb off a tree branch!--but it has allegedly been swarming a couple of times a year so we're hoping for our traps to pick up one of the swarms.<br />

<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A simple guide to sustainable top-bar beekeeping for the amateur,
<em>The Barefoot Beekeeper</em> is for those “who love bees and understand and
appreciate their vial role in the pollination of a huge range of both wild and
cultivated plants.” P. J. Chandler certainly loves his bees. He admits right away that he is not a bee expert, he simply loves bees and wants all the best for them. <em>The Barefoot Beekeeper</em> demonstrates a beekeeping philosophy and practice where honey production and profit are last on the agenda and the welfare of the bees are the top priority. If you want to get into sustinable beekeeping or want to change your beekeeping practices, this book is a great starting point. Although production is not the ultimate goal, if you care for your bees and really love your bees, they will give you ample rewards.</span> </span></div>
